Our Story

We're Lil and Rob, and together we've turned our shared passion for creating into Tangled by Design. What started as a hobby in our backyard shed has become a labour of love, where we craft unique, one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces that tell stories.

Our journey began when we realized we both loved making things with our hands. Lil's eye for design and attention to detail perfectly complements Rob's engineering mindset and problem-solving approach. Together, we've created a workshop where creativity meets precision.

Every piece we create is handmade in our home workshop in Tasmania, Australia, where the scent of Tasmanian timber and resin mingles with the sound of tools at work. We believe in the beauty of imperfection and the value of authenticity - no mass production, just genuine craftsmanship.

Lil - The Creative Heart

By day, Lil shapes young minds as a prep teacher, fostering creativity and curiosity in her students. This nurturing spirit flows naturally into her jewellery making, where she approaches each piece with the same patience and care she gives her classroom.

Lil's passion for jewellery design emerged from her love of self-expression and unique style. She sees jewellery not just as accessories, but as wearable art that can tell a story and boost confidence. Her teaching background gives her a unique perspective - she knows how to break down complex designs into achievable steps, and she's never afraid to try new techniques. Recently embracing the power tools in the workshop, Lil has discovered the joy of working with timber - sending wood chips flying with confidence that amazes Rob. It takes a special kind of fearlessness to master tools that seemed intimidating just months ago.

When she's not teaching or crafting, you'll find Lil sketching new designs, exploring colour combinations, or hunting for inspiration in nature and everyday moments. Her favourite part of the process? Seeing someone fall in love with a piece that was made just for them.

Rob - The Technical Mind

As a Platforms Engineer, Rob spends his days building and optimizing complex systems. But when he steps into the workshop, those same problem-solving skills take on a whole new form - transforming raw materials into wearable art.

Rob's love for building and DIY projects has been a lifelong passion. From woodworking to metalworking to electronics, he's always been drawn to the satisfaction of creating something tangible with his own hands. His engineering background brings precision and innovation to our craft, whether it's perfecting a particularly tricky technique or problem-solving how to achieve the exact effect we're envisioning.

What drives Rob is the challenge of making the impossible possible. He loves experimenting with new materials and pushing the boundaries of what handmade jewellery can be. His favourite projects? The ones that make Lil say "Can we actually do that?" - because the answer is always "Let's find out!"
