From workshop to wearable art
A peek inside our home workshop
Our workshop is more than just a shed in the backyard - it's where creativity comes alive. Filled with woodworking tools, vibrant resins, and Tasmanian timbers, this is where we spend our evenings and weekends transforming ideas into wearable art. From saws and planers to resin moulds and hand tools, our growing collection of equipment helps us bring each unique piece to life.
Walking into our workshop, the rich scent of Tasmanian timbers fills the air - huon pine, blackwood, and other beautiful local woods waiting to be shaped. You'll find walls lined with organized chaos - containers of colorful resin pigments, wood offcuts sorted by type, beads and findings, and an ever-growing collection of tools for every technique we've mastered.
Our shed is constantly evolving. While we have many of the woodworking essentials - saws, planers, sanders, and hand tools - there's always another tool on the wish list as we explore new techniques. The workbench bears the marks of countless projects, and you'll often catch the smell of fresh-cut timber or resin curing.
Lil approaches the workshop with an artist's eye, carefully selecting colours, wood grains, and resin combinations that complement each other. Her teaching background shows in the way she organizes materials and thinks through each step of a design.
Rob brings the engineer's precision, building jigs and fixtures that make complex techniques repeatable, and constantly problem-solving to achieve the exact effect we're looking for. Together, we've created a workflow that balances creativity with consistency.
From concept to completion
Every piece begins with an idea. We draw inspiration from nature, architecture, art, and the world around us. Lil often sketches designs, while Rob thinks about how to make them technically possible.
We refine the concept, select materials, and plan the construction process. This stage involves lots of discussion, sketching, and sometimes creating small prototypes to test techniques.
Choosing the right materials is crucial. We consider colour, texture, weight, durability, and how different materials will work together. We're always on the lookout for unique findings and quality components.
This is where the real work happens. We cut and shape wood, pour and cure resin, and carefully assemble components. Each technique requires focus and patience. Some pieces come together in an evening; others take weeks as we wait for resin to cure between layers.
The details matter. We carefully sand and polish wood surfaces, buff resin to a glass-like finish, and ensure every connection is secure. Quality control is rigorous - every component must be durable and comfortable to wear.
Once a piece passes our quality standards, it's photographed, packaged with care, and ready to find its new home. We love knowing that our creations will become part of someone's daily life.
The building blocks of our craft
We work with beautiful Tasmanian timbers - huon pine, blackwood, myrtle, and others. We're drawn to the character in each piece: burl wood with its intricate swirls, scarred timber with stories to tell, natural knots that create unique patterns. Using saws, planers, sanders, and hand tools, we shape each piece while preserving what makes it special.
Resin allows us to capture vibrant colours, create depth, and combine seamlessly with wood. From transparent teal pours to bold colour blocks, we've learned to control this versatile material through experimentation and patience. Each resin component is hand-poured and cured with care.
The finest details are added by hand - shaping, refining edges, creating smooth transitions between wood and resin. This meditative work requires both planning and intuition, ensuring each component fits together perfectly and feels beautiful to wear.
The magic happens when we combine wood and resin. Whether it's filling natural wood grain with colored resin, creating geometric patterns, or building layered components, these combinations create truly unique pieces that showcase both materials beautifully.
Texture and finish make all the difference. We hand-sand wood to bring out its natural grain, polish resin to a glass-like clarity, and carefully select matte or glossy finishes. Each surface is treated to catch the light and invite touch.
The final assembly requires attention to detail. We carefully select findings - ear wires, jump rings, cord or chain - that complement each design without overpowering the handcrafted components. Functionality is just as important as aesthetics.
We'll never sacrifice quality for speed. Each piece receives the time and attention it deserves. This means our production is small-batch, but it ensures that every item meets our high standards.
Handmade means no two pieces are identical, and we celebrate that. The slight variations, the unique colour mixes, the one-of-a-kind patterns - these aren't flaws, they're features that make each piece special.
Every project teaches us something new. We're constantly learning new techniques, experimenting with materials, and refining our skills. Our work today is better than last month, and next month will be better still.
We don't create for the sake of production. Every piece is made with purpose, whether it's exploring a new technique, bringing a design vision to life, or creating something we know someone will love to wear.
